Quilt Study Group talk by Anita Brown on 13th July 2019

On the 13^th of July, Anita Brown will give a talk for the Quilt Study Group titled “How Art & Craft lead me to Modern Quilting”

“From an early age I learnt paint and print techniques, and how to sew fabric and leather. I then developed an interest in the history of art and architecture. In this way I developed my style which has always been a mixture of Art & the usefulness of Craft.”

Please encourage everyone you know who is interested in quilting to come along to the Quilt Study Group of NSW talks. The Glover Cottages is a beautiful light-filled venue for the talks and it is an easy walk through The Rocks area from either Wynyard or Circular Quay train stations. Quilt Study Group talk by Dr Annette Gero on Saturday 9 March 2019

The first QSG of NSW talk for 2019 is titled “War and Pieced.-. Extraordinary Geometric Masterpieces and Appliquéd Quilts made from Military Fabrics” and will be given by Dr. Annette Gero. She will talk about her spectacular and now famous collection of complex geometric masterpieces and appliquéd quilts made from military fabrics. The talk will take place at 2pm on the 9^th of March at The Glover Cottages, 124 Kent Street in Millers Point. 

Annette’s blockbuster exhibition of quilts, "War and Pieced", has just returned from Broadway in New York where 55,000 people attended the display at the American Folk Art Museum. All were made by men however nobody knows why these quilts were made and how men managed to sew them in such magnificent style. Many have up to 25,000 pieces in a quilt. Some quilters have even started sewing their own replicas of them!!!

The exhibition, “War and Pieced.-. Extraordinary Geometric Masterpieces and Appliquéd

 Quilts made from Military Fabrics” is going to be on display at The Cowra Regional Art Gallery from the 16^th February to 28^th April 2019.  This is a wonderful chance to hear about the mystery of the makers, the fabrics and designs as well as the sewing techniques used in making these quilts before going to see the exhibition. Even if you can't get there Annette will give a detailed talk about the collection and the design of these magnificent quilts, and show us some of her quilts.  If you have anything similar at home please bring it along.

QSG of NSW 2019 Talks

The schedule of talks for the Quilt Study Group in 2019 is now set. They will take place at 2pm at The Glover Cottages, 124 Kent Street in Millers Point.

The first talk will be given by Dr Annette Gero on Saturday the 9^th of March. It is titled “War and Pieced - Extraordinary Geometric Masterpieces and Appliquéd Quilts made from Military Fabrics” and coincides with the display of her military quilt collection at The Cowra Regional Art Gallery. 

On Saturday the 13^th of July Anita Brown will talk to us about her background, show us her quilts, and in the process tell us how she started creating Modern quilts. She will also cover her interest in ‘the Modern movement’ and tell us about the Modern Quilt Guild in Sydney.

The last talk for the year will be on the 7^th of September. Chris Timmins, the Template Newsletter editor, has agreed to talk to us about her experience as a country quilter and quilt teacher. She will explain how she encouraged a new generation of quilters, including her school students, to enter their quilts into the Sydney Quilt Show and in the process give us tips on how start young people on their own sewing and quilting journey.
